Blanket Exercise

September 21, 2024 at 12:00 pm

On September 21, 2024 the United in Spirit Reaching-Out Team of (Niverville & Steinbach United Churches) is inviting all to attend a Blanket Exercise from 12 to 4pm in Niverville at the Community Resource and Recreation Centre, 501 Centre St.

A soup & sandwich lunch will be served.

Susie McPherson Derendy and Debbie Dandy from Brandon will be our leaders. In order for preparations to accommodate everyone, please sign up by either phoning the church office and leaving a message confirming you’ll be attending or add your name to the sign up sheet in each church. Car pooling is highly recommended.

The Blanket Exercise is an educational process which was developed by Kairos, an ecumenical network with a focus on education. It uses role-play to convey  Canadian history from an Indigenous perspective. The goal is to work towards Truth and Reconciliation through deepening our understanding of the history which has affected us all. Susie and Debbie are skilled in leading this process.

The journey towards reconciliation requires a willingness on the part of non-Indigenous people to be open to learning, which requires effort, and to change, even if it remakes us uncomfortable.
